After a long day at work, Alex set on the couch.
A large stack of free books sat in the corner.
Notice anything wrong with these two sentences?
If you noticed the ever so common yet grievous misuse of the verbs sit and set, than you were correct! Ding ding ding, we have a grammar guro setting in the building! Oops, I mean sitting.
For those of you who didn't notice anything wrong, here is the grammar rule:
Booties sit.
Objects set.
Do you have a booty? Then you sit. Does your dog have a booty? Then he or she also sits.
Do books have booties? No. Therefore they set. Same thing with boxes, pencils, groceries, etc. The list could go on and on!
